Bats |
November and
December spectacle – Enormous colony of
migratory straw-collared fruitbats arrives at
the onset of the rains. An estimated 1 million
bats leave their roost at dusk, darkening the
sky. Best seen from the Fibwe hide 20 minutes
after sundown. |

Birding |
The diversity of
habitats offers rewarding birding. The miombo
woodland is particularly rich in diversity. |

Guided walks |
Various, including
mature riparian forest which provides refuge for
the Blue Monkey and Pel’s Fishing owl. |

Boating trips |
Available from
Luwombwa camp offers excellent birding and
fishing. |
|
Fishing |
best on the
Luwombwa river. Largemouth bream, yellowbelly
bream, vundu and tigerfish are the most common
species. Anglers must bring their own fishing
tackle. |

Gamedrives |
There is a network
of roads suitable for 4 x 4 and vehicles with
high clearance. |

Fibwe hide |
In the morning for
Sitatunga and birds, or a stunning spot to watch
the sunset. |

Walking trecks |
Walking with a
scout, camping out for 3 or 4 days either with
own tents and sleeping bags, or Kasanka can
organise supplies and set up camp ahead of
guests. |

Livingstone
memorial, where the Doctor died in 1873;
picturesque Lake WakaWaka for breakfast,
swimming and boating; one of the best examples
of Africa’s schematic rock paintings at Nsalu
Cave National Monument; Kundalila falls,

Local Culture |
The possibilities
are limitless and depending on what is happening
in the community, can be individually tailored
to the guest. To maintain spontaneity, the same
village will not be visited each time.

including fish ponds; animal husbandry;
sunflower press; jam making; wild fruit & honey
collecting in the forest. |

The crops grown in
the area are maize, cassava, groundnuts, sorghum
and millet. Harvesting time for the different
crops extends into the middle of the dry season. |

Daily village life
- rethatching houses; preparing and cooking
