Kasanka National Park

Kasanka is a lovely little park of 420sq km with a wide range of habitats including floodplains dotted with picturesque fig tree and palm islands; mushitu, evergreen swamp forest; papyrus swamps and miombo woodland.

The park is famous for its enormous, migratory colony of straw-coloured fruitbats. Blue monkey and the shy swamp-dwelling antelope, sitatunga are notable specials. There are over 330spp of birds including the Pel’s fishing owl, African Finfoot, Ross’ loerie and Boehm’s beeeater. The more common mammals include numerous puku; the majestic sable; lichtenstein’s hartebeest, warthog and elephant, thought to migrate from the Congo.

In addition to the Nile crocodile, the slender-snouted crocodile, normally confined to Africa’s equatorial forests, has been recorded in the park.

The abundance and diversity of wildlife is extraordinary considering that by 1985, poaching had seriously depleted game numbers. Since then, under an agreement with the Zambian Wildlife Authority, the park has been privately managed and funded. Integration with the local community is paramount to the success of the park. Scientific research is a high priority, with permanent research programmes in place.
