Mutinondo Wilderness is located on a private 10,000 ha reserve in an area of exceptional beauty. It really is a true wilderness experience with no neighbours for 20km, surrounded by miombo woodland and granite whaleback hills. Each of the 4 chalets have been carefully positioned to ensure complete privacy whilst offering commanding views across the valley of the Musamfushi River. One gets the feeling that not even a blade of grass was disturbed during the building. You need to actually walk in between the plants to get to your room, like entering a children’s fairytale. And there, before you is the most wonderful, luxurious room, handcrafted from rich local timber, open to the beauty of Africa on the one side, so that you can lie in bed and relish the moment the sun rises over the hills. Constructed of thatch, burnt brick walls and stone floors, the chalets are each a unique design and finished in a different timber handcrafted on site (right down to the window latches and toilet seats!) Each chalet has it’s own fireplace, very welcome in the cold, winter months. The finishing touches include cool drinking water supplied in traditional earthenware clay pots. Mulombwa is the most stunning chalet of them all. Best described as the chalet with the rock sandwich headboard! It is a spacious room ingeniously built into the natural rock, with a raised wooden verandah open to the view.
Walking: the wild forest, tall inselbergs, freezing waterfalls and swimmable (crocodile free) river is the ideal place to explore. Fishing: anglers must supply their own tackle. Notable species of interest include mouth: breeders and mountain stargazer catfish. The area really would lend itself to fly fishing. Art: the beauty of the area is an artist’s paradise. Birding: The diversity of habitats provides rewarding birding, including the Bar-winged Weaver, Long-toed Flufftail and 10 species of sunbird together with an undescribed species. Horse riding: suitable for beginners to novice riders. There are 4 horses available. Canoeing: single and double canoe is available for paddles up the clear river above Choso falls. River Tubing: on the beautiful rivers. Wilderness: Roan antelope, sable, reedbuck and occasionally leopard occur in the area. Botanical surveys of the area have identified over 300 spp of flora to date. Butterfly surveys have revealed 8 specials including, Charaxes sp nr martini known from Mutinondo Wilderness and Kundalila Falls only and the Zambia’s only confirmed record of Pilodenderix bemba. Archaeology: Quartz microliths are scattered everywhere around the lodge. There are Iron Age workings 6km from camp. Three rock art sites are currently known in the area. One of these small sites can be reached by a lovely horseride/drive to Charley’s rock followed by a short climb. Ideal for sundowners! Wet season specials: Mushroom walks from December to February are great fun and delicious. Mutinondo has the largest edible mushroom in the world and their very own yellow truffles. Mobile fly camps: for the more adventurous mobile camps can be arranged in the remote wilderness of the escarpment for extended hikes.
