The Northern Circuit

Northern Zambia is beautiful.

12 day tour around the beautiful and remote wilderness of Northern Zambia. This trip can be done as either a self drive or chauffeur driven holiday.

It is steeped in modern and ancient history. From the refined majesty of Shiwa House and the imprint of Livingstone’s last footsteps, to the mystical brush strokes of stone age rock paintings and the rural life of modern day villagers.

Day 1-3

— Depart Lusaka for Luwombwa in the Kasanka National Park where you will stay for three nights. Kasanka is a lovely little park of 420 square kilometres. There is fantastic bird life here and it is also home to the largest mammal migration of bats in the world (see Going Batty in Kasanka Itinerary)

Day 4-5

— Depart early for Shoebill Camp in the Bangwuelu Wetlands. These wetlands are one of Africa’s most important wetland resources and a designated RAMSAR site. The area is renowned for its vast population of black lechwe.

Day 6-7

— Depart early for Mutinondo Camp where each of the 4 chalet are carefully positioned to ensure complete privacy whilst offering commanding views over the valley. Mutinondo offer a true wilderness experience with no neighbours for 20 kilometres. The lodge is surrounded by granite whaleback hills and miombo woodland.

Day 8-10

— Depart for Kapishya Camp where you will stay in lovely A-frame cottages which overlook gardens and a river. These springs formed part of Sir Stewart-Gore Browne’s Estate of Shiwa N’gandu (which you may now as The Africa House). The therapeutic hot springs were reserved for favoured guests. His grandson, Mark Harvey , has since established a beautiful oasis in the bush beside the springs.

Points of interest in the area are:

Shiwa N’gandu

Shiwa is a beautiful, country house with an incredible aura that leaves one enchanted. You may have read Christina Lambs Africa House which gives you a lot of background to the story surrounding this great house in Africa.

Zambian Rock Art

It is impossible to simplify the geometric rock art into a description that does justice to this rich legacy. In the Kasama District alone there are over 700 rock art sites.

Day 11

— Depart for Mkushi where you will spend the night at Loza Lodge or Forest Inn which makes an ideal stopover on your way back to Lusaka for your outward flight.

Days can be spent game-viewing on foot, by vehicle or boat, fishing the Kafue hot spots, ticking away at that bird list, unwinding with a sundowner in a natural hot spring, ravaging delicious bush meals on peaceful islands in the Kafue River, touring the derelict copper mine, or catching that striking sunset…

Depending on preference and availability, you can choose thatched chalets or safari tents. All the accommodation has been uniquely designed and positioned to have fine views of the Kafue River.

Go Batty in Kasanka

Be part of the largest mammal migration in the world.

This phenomenal event takes place every year from late October to early December. Eight million straw coloured fruit bats arrive and take up residence in trees of the swamp forest.

This incredible event has been kept secret from the world for so long until a recent BBC documentary filmed this awesome gathering of bats. So now the secret is out.

Kasanka is one of Zambia's smaller National Parks and the only privately managed park. The wildlife here is less abundant than in Zambia's other parks but aside from the bats, it is one of the best places to see the elusive sitatunga (a semi aquatic antelope). It also has prolific birdlife so if you are a serious bird watcher you must come to Kasanka.

Kasanka is about 520km's from Lusaka.
You can self drive or an air transfer can be arranged.
One ideally would need to spend two nights here.
Accommodation can be on an all inclusive basis or self catering.
This is an excellent add on if you are interested in exploring the Northern region of Zambia (see our Northern Region Itinerary for other ideas)
