The Great East Road which traverses the length of Eastern Province is the main access to Malawi and Zambia’s world famous national park, South Luangwa. The drive from Lusaka is one of the most picturesque in Zambia. There is something special about this area with its feeling of remoteness and sleepy old towns dotted along the road with their pre 1940s buildings.
As you drive eastwards from Lusaka there is immediately a feeling of “heading bush”. Two hours from the capital city, the road descends steeply down through the wooded hills of the Muchinga escarpment, part of the Great Rift Valley system. There, below you, is the enormous, meandering Luangwa River, having run its course through three national parks and now close to its meeting point with the Zambezi River.
