South African Airways, Delta Air Lines and British Airways cancelled flights on Tuesday due to the adverse weather conditions caused by Winter Storm Stella.
Agents are advised to check the status of their clients’ flights and consult with the airlines before travel commences by visiting the airlines’ websites for all flight updates or cancellations.
“Affected flights are those to and from Washington, Dulles International Airport operated via Accra’s Kotoka International Airport, Ghana, and to and from New York, John F. Kennedy International Airport,” said SAA.
Flight SA 210 from Washington via Accra to Johannesburg and flight SA 204 from New York to Johannesburg were affected yesterday and could still be affected.
SAA passengers will be able to rebook on another SAA flight for a later date at no extra charge and subject to availability of the same booking class. Change of cabin and routing will not be permitted and this policy is applicable to SAA flights only, issued on SA (083) ticket stock and not on separate tickets of other airlines.
These tickets must be re-issued on or before March 17 and travel must commence on or before March 20.
Delta Air Lines cancelled 800 flights on Tuesday in the three New York area airports as well as the Washington D.C. metro area, Boston and smaller northeastern airports.
The airline said it had issued a winter weather waiver on Saturday to allow customers to make one-time schedule changes to their travel plans without a fee.
BA stated that customers scheduled to fly today, Wednesday, March 14, can change the flight booking free of charge, up to and including Friday, March 17. This applies if flights are still due to operate or cancelled.
Yesterday, BA cancelled all flights to and from New York JFK, Newark or Philadelphia as well as flights from London Heathrow to Boston. Only a few flights to and from Washington and Baltimore operated.
