Rwanda Air

African carrier RwandAir is to further expand its network within the continent with the launch of a new direct service to Douala, Cameroon from its Kigali International Airport base.  The airline, the flag carrier of Rwanda, will introduce the four times weekly service on 30th March 2014 and will further support its growth in the Central and West African markets. Douala will be the airline’s 16th destination since it rebranded in 2009 and will be its fifth link into West Africa complementing its existing services to Accra, Libreville, Brazzaville, Lagos.  As well as supporting point-to-point demand the flight will also provide additional feed into Kigali International Airport for the carrier’s existing flights to the Middle East and expected future services into Europe and Asia.

Air Mauritius

Air Mauritius plans to increase its Mauritius – Beijing service from the 16th July 2014, with the addition of a 2nd weekly flight. The new flight will operate on Wednesdays from Mauritius and Thursdays from Beijing.

Air Mauritius

Air Mauritius launched a unilateral codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia effective 18th December 2013, which sees the “MK” code appearing on Virgin’s domestic Australian service via Perth. Codeshare flight number range is MK8900 – 8999, on the following routes

Perth – Brisbane
Perth – Melbourne
Perth – Sydney

Emirates will reduce operation to Ethiopia from 01st May 2014 to 20th July 2014, as the airline cancels it’s Tuesdays Dubai – Addis Ababa service.

Fast jet

African low-cost carrier, fast jet, has confirmed that it is in discussions with the Zambian government with the intention of creating a fast jet operation based at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, the main gateway into the country’s capital city, Lusaka.  The announcement comes ahead of the airline’s launch of flights to Lusaka from its Tanzanian base at Julius Nyerere International Airport, the principal airport serving Dar es Salaam, the largest city in the country, from February 1, 2014, the second international service following the introduction of flights to Johannesburg last year.

Despite strong trading between Tanzania and Zambia, driven in part by landlocked Zambia’s reliance on Dar es Salaam’s port, there are currently limited air links between Dar es Salaam and Lusaka. A steady increase in the onerous, 25 hour cross-border journeys undertaken by both Tanzanians and Zambians by road, demonstrates the need for affordable air travel between the two countries, which fast jet intends to fulfill by launching its flights along this route. It says it has “already recorded strong interest and sales” since opening reservations last year.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) carrier, Emirates Airline, is to introduce a second frequency on its Dubai – Dublin route, reaffirming the Republic of Ireland capital as one of the most successful route launches in the carrier’s history.  The second daily rotation will commence on 01st September 2014 and follows just two and half years since the hub carrier first introduced flights into the Irish market.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines in the Summer 2014 season is expanding services on selected markets to West and Central Africa. Planned service increases are as follows

Istanbul Ataturk – Lagos effective 26MAY14 Airbus A330-200 operates daily, replacing 737-900ER
Istanbul Ataturk – Niamey – Ouagadougou – Istanbul Ataturk effective 30MAR14 Addition of 5th weekly service, 737-800 replace -900ER
