Busanga Plains Camp - Kafue National Park
Hotel description
The Busanga plains Camp is located deep in the heart of the famous Busanga Plains, a stunning wetland area. The Busanga Plains Camp is the seasonal bush camp of Mukambi Safari Lodge. The Plains Camp is an exciting five hour drive from Mukambi Safari Lodge through the Kafue National Park. A trip to the Busanga Plains brings you back to the days that a safari took an exciting trip to reach your destination. Every journey called for a sense of adventure, a desire to explore the unknown.
You can be one of the few to experience the unique remoteness of The Mukambi Plains Camp on Busanga. Join us on an old-fashioned safari.
Bush Camp & Wild Life
Thier tented camp lies in an area so remote that although famous for insiders, only a few people have discovered the Busanga Plains. It is only accessible four months a year.
Here lions and cheetahs prey on animals such as wildebeest, roan and buffalo to name a few. Lechwe and Puku graze on the central swamps while the shy Sitatunga hides in the papyrus reeds. Crowned and wattled cranes, secretary birds and ground hornbills stalk the grasslands whose openness is interrupted only by tree studded islands.
Here ancient fig trees (the famous One Fig) and palms draw their nutrients from giant termite hills. It is a landscape so distinctive, like no other you will see in Africa.
Room description
The Plains Camp consists of 4 fully furnished tents, each with an en-suite bathroom. Each tent can sleep 2 persons. The camp is located in the middle of the plains on an island and from your tent you have a perfect view on the plains and the marsh.

Specialities
There is a main dining area with a bar on a raised wooden deck with an expansive thatch roof. This looks out to the East, allowing for beautiful sun rises to be seen in the morning. A small fireplace on the end of a wooden deck is where the nights are spent warming up and telling stories. There is WiFi on the main deck and a power point to charge phones, laptops and cameras. Likewise there are several power points in the tents. The paths to the tents are lit by paraffin lamps. The manager will escorts the guests to their tents at night. Mukambi is famous for its excellent cuisine, friendly staff and highly experienced rangers.
Laundry: Complimentary laundry services.
Game drives depart from Busanga Plains camp daily. One departs at sunrise and the afternoon drive (partly a night drive) leaves at approximately 2 hours before sunset. Drives are 3.5 to 4 hours long. You will make your way across the open plains from camp, the beauty of drives here is the openness of the plains, it guarantees that you will see multiple species in view at once. It also means you have the chance to see some spectacular stalking by predators of the various types of antelope, and the speed at which they can run on open ground.
The Busanga Plains area is also perfectly situated to see large numbers of less common animals such as puku, red lechwe, Lichtenstein’s hartebeast, oribi and servals. But is is also well know for the big lions, buffalo, elephant and wildebeest. Cheetah and wild dog are also often sighted, while a special treat is the ‘resident’ herd of rare roan antelope. For birding enthusiasts, the park boasts over 500 species, including endemics such as Chaplin’s barbet & African fin foot.
Walking safaris take place around the plains surrounding the camp, and is more of a nature walk to see all the tracks, droppings and small insects on the ground to avoid the heat of the day it starts around an hour after sunrise.
A Night Under the Stars: Stepping outdoors to sleep beneath the stars has been known to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And because sleep is one of the three major pillars of health, it only makes sense that slumbering in the great outdoors is something we should all try at least once in our life time.
