Kenya Proposes Increase In Air Ticket Taxes After 13-Years

- Nairobi, Kenya – The Government of Kenya is moving forward with plans to revise taxes on both domestic and international air travel, marking the first adjustment in over 13 years. The proposed changes are part of a legislative initiative introduced by the National Assembly’s Majority Leader, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah.

Under the proposed Bill, levies on international air tickets would increase by 25%, while domestic air ticket taxes would rise by 20%. Specifically, the tax on international flights is set to move from approximately US$40 to US$50, and domestic ticket taxes from (US$3.8) to (US$4.6).

The Bill has already passed its second reading in the National Assembly, signaling strong legislative momentum. If enacted, the new tax structure would represent a significant shift in Kenya’s aviation policy, aimed at boosting government revenue and aligning with broader fiscal reforms.

The proposed adjustments come amid ongoing efforts to modernize Kenya’s transport infrastructure and strengthen public finances. Stakeholders in the aviation and tourism sectors are closely monitoring the development, given its potential impact on travel demand and operational costs.
