Ghana and Zambia Unveil Historic Visa-Free Travel Pact to Boost Continental Connectivity
- Ghana and Zambia have signed a landmark visa-free travel agreement allowing citizens of both countries to travel without visas for the first time in their history. The deal was formalized in Lusaka during Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama’s three-day state visit, where he met with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.
The agreement is expected to ease travel for tourists, businesspeople, students, and professionals, removing longstanding bureaucratic barriers. Both governments say the move will boost tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchange, while strengthening people-to-people ties.
Zambia’s Ministry of Tourism described the policy as a historic step aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision of greater continental integration. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, called the visa waiver one of the most significant outcomes of the visit, highlighting its potential to unlock new economic opportunities.
The arrangement also supports Ghana’s broader push to expand visa-free access for its citizens and reflects Zambia’s commitment to open borders and regional cooperation. Both countries see the agreement as a model for advancing African unity and economic integration.
