Congo to Open Borders Visa-Free to All Africans from January 2027 in Landmark Integration Push
- The Republic of Congo has announced that it will introduce visa-free travel for all African nationals from 1 January 2027, marking a major shift in the country’s immigration policy. President Denis Sassou Nguesso made the announcement during the African Development Bank’s 2026 Annual Meetings in Brazzaville, describing the move as a step toward greater African integration and stronger regional cooperation.
The decision is particularly significant given Congo-Brazzaville’s reputation as one of Central Africa’s more restrictive destinations for travellers. The policy is expected to support the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by making movement across the continent easier for tourists, business travellers, and investors.
For the travel industry, the move opens new opportunities for multi-country tourism packages that include Congo’s rainforests, Congo River experiences, wildlife reserves, and cultural attractions in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Destinations such as Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki National Parks are expected to become more accessible to African travellers.
The visa-free policy is also likely to boost business travel and encourage airlines to expand routes into Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire from major African hubs. Congo’s decision now places pressure on other African countries to reconsider restrictive visa systems and accelerate regional integration.
