African Nations Strengthen Sustainable Aviation Commitments

- Madagascar, Zambia and Zimbabwe have reinforced Africa's role in sustainable aviation by signing the Aviation Carbon Market Compact. Their accession, alongside the United Kingdom and Guyana, increases the membership of the Supporting Alliance for CORSIA Eligible Emissions Unit (EEU) Supply to 50 entities, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The agreement supports the implementation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which requires participating airlines to offset a portion of their international emissions through certified carbon credits. With CORSIA's mandatory phase commencing in 2027, demand for eligible emissions units is expected to increase significantly.

For Madagascar, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Compact provides an opportunity to strengthen their position in international carbon markets by leveraging their extensive natural resources and conservation initiatives. The move also enhances their visibility among global airlines, investors and carbon credit buyers while supporting the development of robust national carbon market frameworks.

The agreement complements wider regional efforts to advance climate finance and carbon trading. As the aviation sector continues its transition towards lower emissions, Africa is increasingly positioned to contribute to the global supply of high-quality carbon credits while promoting sustainable tourism and long-term economic growth.
