Victoria Falls Bridge Set for Tourism Transformation as Heavy Freight Diverts Downstream

- Zimbabwe and Zambia have reached a landmark agreement to enhance the travel experience at the historic Victoria Falls Bridge by removing heavy commercial vehicles and freight trains. Industrial traffic will be redirected to a purpose-built crossing downstream along the Zambezi River, preserving the bridge’s structural integrity and heritage value.

Since its construction in 1905, the bridge has carried a mix of vehicles, rail traffic, pedestrians and tourism activities, placing increasing strain on the ageing structure. The decision, confirmed by Hakainde Hichilema, ensures that heavy trucks and long freight trains will no longer traverse the site.

The planned development of a new road and rail bridge will support modern trade demands while allowing the existing crossing to prioritise tourism and light vehicles. This separation is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Tourism access and activities will remain unaffected, while implementation timelines depend largely on funding and construction planning. Overall, the initiative reflects a strategic effort to balance infrastructure development with heritage preservation and tourism growth.
